Costco Wholesale Corporation’s business is built around a deceptively difficult proposition: use membership income, a deliberately narrow assortment, fast inventory turns and low operating costs to offer members compelling value while earning thin but resilient retail margins. The company operates 933 warehouses across multiple markets and supplements its warehouses with e-commerce, ancillary services and a growing digitally enabled offering. Its advantage is not a single product category; it is a high-frequency value proposition that encourages repeat visits and supports purchasing scale.

Stock Introduction & Thesis
Costco’s investment case rests on the durability of that membership-led flywheel. Lower prices can increase traffic; higher volume can improve purchasing economics and inventory velocity; the resulting value perception can reinforce renewal and member spending. Costco describes its operating model as pairing limited selection and low prices with high sales volume, rapid turnover and no-frills facilities, a structure designed to operate at lower gross margins than traditional retailers.[1]
That framework has become particularly relevant while consumers remain budget conscious. Reuters reported that elevated fuel prices and broader price sensitivity helped bring shoppers to Costco’s gas stations and warehouses during the third quarter, while management emphasized price gaps as a member priority.[2] The central thesis is therefore operational rather than cyclical: Costco can defend member loyalty by reinvesting in value, but the equity’s premium valuation leaves little room for a material slowdown in comparable sales, membership economics or cash generation.
Recent Developments & Catalysts
The latest completed earnings period was fiscal third quarter 2026, the 12 weeks ended May 10. Net sales rose 11.6% year over year to $69.15 billion, while total revenue increased to $70.53 billion. GAAP net income rose to $2.19 billion and diluted earnings per share reached $4.93, compared with $4.28 in the prior-year quarter.[3] The sales result was supported by reported total comparable sales growth of 9.8%; after excluding gasoline-price and foreign-exchange effects, comparable sales grew 6.6%. Digitally enabled comparable sales increased 20.8% on that adjusted basis, signaling that Costco’s digital channel is growing faster than its warehouse base.
More recent monthly data preserved that momentum. For the four weeks ended August 2, Costco reported July net sales of $23.12 billion, up 10.7% from the prior year. Total-company comparable sales rose 8.9% reported and 6.6% excluding gasoline and foreign exchange, while digitally enabled comparable sales increased 18.2% on the adjusted basis.[4] Those figures do not constitute a completed-quarter result, but they offer a useful read-through on traffic, member demand and the pace heading into fiscal year-end.
Two dated catalysts are immediate. Costco’s August sales release is scheduled for September 2, 2026, followed by its fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings call on September 24, 2026.[1] Investors will be watching whether adjusted comparable sales remain steady, whether digital growth keeps adding to engagement and whether price investments preserve traffic without widening the pressure on merchandise economics.
Investment implications: The operating evidence remains constructive: both the latest quarter and July trading update showed healthy adjusted comparable-sales growth. The key distinction is that reported growth has benefited from volatile gasoline and currency effects, so the 6.6% adjusted measure is the cleaner benchmark for assessing underlying demand.
Financial Analysis
Costco remains a low-margin retailer, so quality depends on volume, membership income and cash conversion. In fiscal Q1 2026, net sales grew 8.2% to $65.98 billion and diluted EPS rose to $4.50 from $4.04.[5] Fiscal Q2 net sales increased 9.1% to $68.24 billion and diluted EPS reached $4.58. Q3 then accelerated to 11.6% net-sales growth and $4.93 of diluted EPS.
For the first 36 weeks of fiscal 2026, total revenue rose 9.7% to $207.43 billion, operating income advanced 12.0% to $7.88 billion and GAAP diluted EPS increased 13.5% to $14.01.[3] Membership fees reached $4.06 billion, up 12.7%, supporting the recurring component of earnings. Operating cash flow rose to $11.13 billion from $9.47 billion, while capital expenditures increased to $4.23 billion from $3.53 billion as Costco invested in capacity.
Margin discipline is the counterweight. Q3 operating income growth outpaced revenue growth, but the operating margin was effectively flat at 3.99%, compared with 4.00% a year earlier. That outcome is consistent with a model that returns part of its purchasing advantage to members through pricing. Small changes in wages, freight, commodities or tariffs can matter. At May 10, Costco held $18.95 billion of cash and cash equivalents against $5.67 billion of long-term debt excluding current maturities, giving it substantial liquidity for investment, dividends and opportunistic capital decisions.[3]

Investment implications: Revenue growth, membership-fee growth and operating cash flow have moved in the right direction, while the flat operating margin shows the trade-off inherent in the thesis. Costco does not need a large margin expansion to create value, but it does need enough volume and renewal strength to finance price leadership and its store-expansion program.
Valuation & Competitive Position
At $943.89 per share on September 1, 2026, Costco’s value proposition is not inexpensive on a trailing basis. Using GAAP diluted EPS of $19.88 for the trailing 12 months—fiscal Q4 2025 plus the first 36 weeks of fiscal 2026—the shares trade at 47.48x trailing earnings. Using 443.514 million shares outstanding, its market capitalization is $418.63 billion; against trailing revenue of $293.59 billion, the price-to-sales ratio is 1.43x.
Cash flow is demanding. Trailing operating cash flow is $15.00 billion and trailing capital expenditures are $6.19 billion, implying $8.81 billion of trailing free cash flow and a 2.10% free-cash-flow yield. A trailing PEG ratio of 3.72x is calculated by dividing the 47.48x trailing P/E by trailing GAAP diluted-EPS growth of 12.76%. It is not a consensus-based forward PEG.[6]
Costco earns this premium through advantages that are difficult to reproduce at scale: membership economics, purchasing power, a reputation for value, rapid inventory turns and international whitespace. Its competitive challenge is also evolving. Faster delivery and digital convenience from large retailers and marketplaces raise the cost of maintaining engagement, while Costco’s own average same-day delivery time in the United States was reported at less than 45 minutes in Q3.[2]
Investment implications: The multiple places the burden of proof on execution. A durable franchise can warrant a premium, but a 47.48x trailing P/E and 2.10% free-cash-flow yield leave the shares sensitive to decelerating comparable sales, membership weakness or any deterioration in pricing-led loyalty.
Risks & Outlook
The most immediate risk is that Costco’s value investments protect traffic at the expense of merchandise margin. Beef, transportation, energy, memory-chip-related appliance costs and trade-policy uncertainty were among the pressures discussed around the latest results.[2] Currency movements and gasoline-price changes can also make headline comparable sales more volatile, which is why adjusted figures deserve close attention. Sustained cost inflation could make this trade-off more acute for investors.
A second risk is valuation compression. If earnings continue growing but the market assigns a lower multiple, shareholders can experience muted or negative returns despite sound operating performance. A third is execution: warehouse openings, international expansion, e-commerce delivery and labor productivity must keep pace with investment. Finally, a weakening consumer, competitive price matching or a cybersecurity/privacy incident could impair traffic, costs or member trust. Costco’s next sales release and Q4 earnings report should clarify whether the high-frequency indicators remain intact.
